What Is a Maid of Honor?

In traditional wedding parties, a maid of honor (also known as a “matron of honor” if the woman is married, or a “man of honor” if your honorary person is male) is a specially chosen to lead bridesmaid or wedding party member that serves as the bride’s right hand helpers. She is appointed by the bride to help with additional tasks beyond the typical list of bridesmaid duties. In most cases, the maid of honor is a close friend or family of the bride.

The decision to have a maid of honor is up to you and what feels right for your celebration. Whether you opt for no maid of honor, multiple maids of honor, or even decide a wedding party isn’t for you, there is no wrong answer. Consider your options, check in with yourself and your partner, and make the choice that work best for your circumstances.

What Does a Maid of Honor Do?

Maid of honor duties range from planning the bridal shower and bachelorette party, to helping choose the wedding dress, to holding the bridal bouquet during the ceremony and the list goes on and on. In general, she’s there to assist the bride with items on her checklist and support her emotionally before and during the wedding festivities.

What to Ask Yourself When Choosing Your Maid of Honor

When you begin thinking about your maid of honor, first ask yourself is there’s an obvious choice, such as a best friend or a close sibling. If there’s no clear pick, then take time to think about the individuals in your wedding party and how they might handle the long list of duties that go along with the title.

Here is our guide to consider asking yourself as you ponder who would be the right person for the job:

  1. Is there anyone who has party or wedding planning experience?

  2. Is there anyone who will be hurt if they aren’t chosen?

  3. Is there anyone that would be burdened financially?

  4. Who has the best leadership skills?

  5. Who is organized and punctual?

  6. Who understands and knows me best?

  7. Who is least likely to cause drama?

  8. Who is has great taste?

  9. Who is great at offering advice without being pushy?

  10. Who is best at delegating tasks?

  11. Who can commit extra time to maid of honor duties?

  12. Who can financially afford to cover the maid of honor duties?

  13. Who is great at staying calm under pressure?

  14. Who is my go-to person when I need to talk?

  15. Who is okay not being the center of attention?

Here is a guide for to choose a maid of honor

Before we end we wanted to share what may help you when having we make the hard choice. We get it and see it on wedding day. So here are a few things to help with the DRAMA.

Tips for Avoiding Drama

1. Don’t Use Titles

An easy way to help alleviate the potential of hurt feelings is not to assign titles like “maid of honor” that set one person apart as your favorite. Instead, refer to everyone by the same honorific, even if you do have a dedicated person acting as your right hand.

2. Make Sure Everyone Feels Included

To show all members of your wedding party that they are loved and appreciated, make sure everyone is included in some way, whether that’s by assigning each person a small task or just a offering a simple “thank you for being here” in a personally written card.

3. Don’t Make It a Big Deal

A quick way to make your other bridesmaids feel excluded is to make a big deal about the maid of honor selection. You don’t have to make everyone feel like they lost out to ensure your honorary pick feels special.

Happy Planning,

XOXO

We are ending our four part series Photo Tour around The Wright House with the original home. Every home has a soul, made up of brick and mortar and the memories lived there. The soul of The Wright House was born in the 1930’s as a farmhouse outside the young city of Mesa, Arizona. It had its own well for water, and a white picket fence fronted a dirt road that ran into Tempe where the old Hayden Flour Mill was in full operation.

In the 1930’s the home was purchased by Lorenzo & Teresa Wright. Lorenzo and his son, Harold, started a grocery business in Mesa that operated for 50 years.

In 1945, Harold and his wife, Leah, bought the house from Lo & Teresa. They remodeled, adding some rooms, and Leah planted many flowers and some of the trees and shrubs that still remain.

Harold and Leah raised four children, creating many happy memories. In the early days, they often invited guest to ride horses on the twenty acres behind the house, cooked steaks & entertained dignitaries traveling through Mesa.

Harold’s son, Michael, and his wife, Peggy, developed the home into The Wright House, Garden Reception Centre in July of 1991. Since then the the original home has seen thousands of weddings yet every single one is so special. Today on the blog we are proud to show off photos of brides and grooms embracing the original home. Let’s begin;

Our Favorite Wedding Photo Spots PART 3

We are continuing our four part series Photo Tour around The Wright House. This post will focus on the Ballrooms back garden. We are showcasing the Gazebo, the Stage and every other little nook within the spacious back gardens. Your guest will spend most of their time in this gardens, making it easy to capture beautiful photos around the stone walkways, vintage fountains and of course the well known LOVE sign. The towering mature trees, blooming flowers beds and the crawling vines along the walls makes you forget you are in Mesa, taking you to a true secret garden feel. Let’s begin;

The Stage

The Stage was originally built to compliment The gazebo where most of our pass couples were wed. However, as soon as the stain-glass window and chandelier were install it made a perfect fit for another location to be wed. Our couples love the stage for the crawling vines along the grand platform and of course the brick step entrance into the shaded glowing stage. Another plus about the Stage is it was made for large family photos! So many of our photographer like to capture big groups under the Stage offering the perfect background but also ideal lighting no matter the time of the day.

Everything else…

The garden is full of small nooks creating the ideal backgrounds for a garden wedding. One of our most memorable is our Marquee light up LOVE sign. So many of our couples and wedding guest have made sure to take a photo here. We also are in love with our birdcage gazebo across the way. This open birdcage gazebo holds our history, as it was created for our beginning weddings 30 years ago. No matter where you look, The Gardens are full and ready to be captured with lighting that every photographer wishes they had everyday.
